Why Are Dilated Eye Exams Important?

We typically recommend an annual dilated eye exam to all our adult patients. When we dilate your pupils, we can see much more of the structures at the back of your eyes, including your retina and optic nerve. This helps us uncover damage related to common eye diseases, including glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, and age-related macular degeneration, even before symptoms appear.

Did You Know? Seniors aged 65+ are covered under OHIP for a full, no-cost annual eye exam. Protecting your vision has never been easier or more important.

What to Expect in Your Eye Exam

At Envision Eye Care, we go the extra mile to provide thorough and informative eye exams relevant to your life. Our exams may take a little longer than you’re used to elsewhere. That’s because we believe in empowering our patients with knowledge, and we plan to have time to answer all your questions.

Thorough Pre-Testing & Dilation

For most of our adult patients, we recommend a dilated eye exam. This allows us to more clearly see and capture images of the fundus (the back of your eye) and catch even the smallest changes that can be signs of eye disease.

Every eye exam includes important testing like OCT (optical coherence tomography) and retinal photography, which offer detailed images of your eye’s internal structures. You’ll also strap on a VR headset for our immersive visual field test to test your peripheral vision.

Together, these technologies help us detect and monitor serious eye conditions such as glaucoma, macular degeneration, and diabetic retinopathy often before they impact your vision.

Personalized Exam & Education

We cover a lot of ground in your exam. Your optometrist will test your visual acuity (how clearly you can see) and update your glasses or contact lens prescription as needed. We’ll ask you questions about the comfort and clarity of your vision and any changes you’ve noticed.

During your exam, our optometrists will walk you through the results of your pre-testing, reviewing your retina and optic nerve imagery and explaining what we’re seeing.

We often capture slit lamp videos during your eye exam. A slit lamp is a special microscope that optometrists use to examine the front part of your eye in detail. It helps them get a close-up view of areas like your cornea (the clear surface), iris (the coloured part), lens, and even parts of the retina and optic nerve at the back of your eye.

You may never have seen this view of your own eyes before!

Dry Eye Screening for All Patients

Dry eye disease affects roughly one-third of Canadians, and its irritating symptoms can significantly impact your daily life. That’s why we provide dry eye screening in every eye exam.

As part of your eye exam, we may test your tear break-up time (how fast your tears leave your eyes) and use meibography (a quick high-resolution photo of your eyelids) to assess your tear film and the oil glands that supply protective oil to your tears. This helps us recommend next steps, including personalized dry eye solutions for relief, if needed.

How Often Should You Get an Eye Exam?

Adults (18–64) should have an eye exam every 1–2 years, depending on their individual needs, as assessed by their optometrist. Contact lens users and those who have higher risks of eye disease should see us at least annually.

Seniors (65+) should schedule annual exams to monitor age-related vision changes.

If you ever experience sudden changes to your vision, such as blurriness, floaters, or eye discomfort, schedule an eye exam with us right away. Early intervention is key to protecting your sight.

Ministry of Transportation (MTO) Approved Testing

If you require a visual field test for your new or renewed driver’s license, we’ve got you covered. Our exams meet MTO standards, and we’ll provide you with the necessary forms to help you get road-ready.
