Why Are My Eyes So Dry and Itchy?
Struggling with dry, itchy eyes? Discover causes, professional testing, and effective treatments with Envision Eye Care, your trusted optometrist in Oakville. […]

Is your child struggling to see the board at school or squinting to read signs in the distance? It might be myopia, commonly known as nearsightedness. The good news? We have effective strategies to manage myopia that weren’t available even a decade ago.
At Envision Eye Care, we offer comprehensive myopia management solutions designed to protect your child’s vision, improve their quality of life, and set them up for a lifetime of healthier eyes.
Research shows that myopia control glasses, contacts, and eye drops can effectively slow or even stop the progression of nearsightedness. That means your child can maintain a lower prescription and also potentially reduce their risk of serious eye diseases later in life.

Progressive myopia doesn’t just mean your child needs stronger glasses every year. Myopia control can allow us to keep your child’s prescription lower, which has multiple benefits, including:
Quality of Life: Imagine your child playing sports, swimming freely without glasses, and not worrying about breaking their glasses!
Preventing Complications: Any amount of myopia can increase the risk of severe eye conditions such as glaucoma, retinal detachment, and macular degeneration later in life.
Better Today, Healthier Tomorrow: A lower prescription in childhood can mean that if they do want laser vision correction later, it’s simpler and less risky.

At Envision Eye Care, our myopia management program is all about customized solutions made for your child’s needs. In other words, we’ll discuss all the options with you so you can confidently choose a solution that makes sense for your family and your kid.
If nearsightedness already runs in your family, there’s a higher likelihood your child will be nearsighted, even if they’re not showing signs of vision issues yet. Regular eye exams are crucial for monitoring your child’s prescription and detecting changes early.
If we detect myopia in their eye exam, we’ll discuss whether daily disposable contacts, overnight contacts, specialized glasses, atropine eye drops, or a combination might work best for your family.
Also called orthokeratology, ortho-k contact lenses gently and temporarily reshape your child’s cornea overnight, allowing clear vision during the day without glasses or contacts. We use the BE FREE ortho-k lens, which is known for its precision and comfort.
Many of our patients appreciate the convenience of ortho-k lenses because it means your child doesn’t have to wear glasses or contacts during the day. Ortho-k has been shown to reduce myopia progression by 50% on average.
Kids as young as 8 can wear daily disposables to correct their vision and slow myopia progression. Because each pair is only worn once and no cleaning is needed, many parents find they’re easier for their kids to manage.
MiSight 1-day Contact Lenses
These daily disposable lenses are proven to slow myopia progression by correcting and controlling sight simultaneously. A clinical study showed that MiSight reduced the rate of progression by 59% on average over 3 years.
Acuvue Abiliti 1-Day Lenses
Designed specifically for children with myopia, Acuvue Abiliti daily disposable lenses offer excellent comfort and clear vision while slowing myopia progression.
Glasses with special myopia control lenses offer a simple, practical way to manage nearsightedness in kids. They’re easy to use and can fit quite seamlessly into daily routines.
MiYOSMART Lenses
MiYOSMART lenses use D.I.M.S. technology to slow myopia progression while providing clear vision and everyday comfort. The lenses have been shown to slow the worsening of nearsightedness by 60% on average, which was maintained over 6 years.
Stellest Lenses
Stellest lenses use H.A.L.T. technology to manage myopia and provide sharp, reliable vision for kids. They’ve been shown to slow myopia progression by 67% on average.
Low-dose atropine eye drops have been shown to be an asset to myopia management. The drops are generally used at night before bed and we typically recommend using in combination with other treatments (either myopia control glasses or contacts) for maximum effectiveness.
As parents ourselves, we understand that despite our best efforts, our kids spend more time indoors and in front of screens than we might like. Both those things are contributing factors to rising myopia rates in children. But there’s hope! Studies show that increasing outdoor time and reducing daily screen exposure may delay myopia onset.
The Canadian Association of Optometrists recommends at least 1 hour of outdoor activity per day and limiting recreational screen time based on age, as follows:
Myopia management is our way of safeguarding your child’s vision now and protecting it for the future. We recommend annual eye exams for your kids so we can stay on top of any vision changes. Their regular eye exam is covered by OHIP, so it’s free for you!

At Envision Eye Care, we provide personalized care for every patient. Our myopia management plans not only prioritize your child’s current needs but also focus on their long-term eye health.
