Why Are Kids’ Annual Eye Exams So Important?

We recommend that children and teens have annual eye exams to support healthy vision and detect any potential issues early. Bring them in for their first eye exam around the age of 6 months.

Vision plays a crucial role in a child’s development, influencing everything from their ability to learn and play to their social interactions. Undetected vision problems can impact their school performance, get in their way in sports, and simply affect having fun.

Things to Know About Your Child’s Vision

Children’s eyes grow and change quickly, and it’s not always clear to parents (or even the kids themselves) when something is wrong.

Common signs of a vision problem are diverse and varied, including squinting, head turning, crossed eyes, dislike of close-up play (like building Lego), short attention spans, and more.

We can catch any issues or concerns in their eye exam and recommend next steps.

Your child’s eye exam will typically include:

  • Vision testing: Assessing their visual acuity at various distances.
  • Eye movement testing: Evaluating how the eyes move together.
  • Binocular vision assessment: Evaluating how the eyes work as a team.
  • Eye health examination: Checking the structures of the eye for any abnormalities.
  • Refraction: Determining if glasses or contacts are needed or if their prescription has changed.

We work hard to create a relaxed and fun atmosphere so your child feels comfortable in their eye exam and even has some fun!

Here are some other common things that can come up in children’s eye exams.

Myopia (nearsightedness) means objects far away appear blurry to your child. It’s very common in children and the prevalence is rising. It tends to worsen before they reach adulthood, so we strongly recommend myopia control glasses, contacts, or eye drops.

Hyperopia (farsightedness) means that close-up objects appear blurry, but your child’s distance vision is typically clear.

Astigmatism means that your child’s vision is blurred or distorted at all distances.

These refractive errors can all typically be corrected with glasses or contacts. However, we recommend myopia control methods if your child is nearsighted.

For kids who love sports or outdoor adventures, contact lenses can be a game-changer. They’re hassle-free, can provide clear vision, and eliminate the worry of glasses breaking during play time. Many kids as young as 8 (sometimes younger!) can wear contacts.

Ortho-k contact lenses are a popular option for kids with myopia. They are only worn at night and temporarily reshape the cornea while your child sleeps. This means they can enjoy clear vision all day without the need for glasses or daytime contacts while also slowing the progression of nearsightedness.

Finding the right glasses for kids means balancing style, comfort, and durability. We offer fun, kid-friendly frames that fit snugly and can stand up to daily wear and tear, so your child looks cool and feels great.

Strabismus, or crossed eyes, occurs when the eyes don’t align properly. This can cause double vision and, if left untreated, lead to the brain “ignoring” one eye.

Strabismus doesn’t resolve on its own. With early intervention, including glasses or vision therapy, we can help train your child’s eyes to work better together.

Often called “lazy eye,” amblyopia happens when one eye is weaker or doesn’t see as clearly as the other. It can be a result of the wrong glasses prescription or strabismus.

Early detection and treatment, like patching or special glasses, can help strengthen the weaker eye and improve vision.

Myopia Management: An Essential Tool for Nearsighted Kids

Kids who are nearsighted (myopic) can see close objects clearly, but distant objects look blurry. When we parents were kids, the only options for nearsightedness were glasses and contacts, but they did nothing to stop vision from worsening.

With myopia control, we can now help keep your child’s prescription more stable or even stop their eyes from becoming more myopic.

At Envision Eye Care, we offer a range of myopia management options to help slow the progression of nearsightedness in children. Our approach is customized to your child’s needs and lifestyle, and we provide ongoing support and monitoring to help provide the best possible outcome.
