What Is Keratoconus?

Keratoconus is a progressive condition where the usually round cornea begins to thin and bulge into a cone-like shape. This irregular shape can lead to blurred or distorted vision and sensitivity to light and glare, making regular activities like reading or driving difficult.

At Envision Eye Care, we provide personalized, supportive care and can co-manage your treatment if you require corneal cross-linking or other surgical solutions. We are also highly skilled in fitting specialized contact lenses designed for patients with keratoconus, helping you achieve better vision.

Specialty Lenses for Keratoconus

If you’ve been told that contact lenses won’t work for your keratoconus, we encourage you to visit us! We specialize in fitting patients with customized lenses, even in challenging cases.

Here’s how we can help at different stages of keratoconus:

  • Glasses & soft contact lenses: For early-stage keratoconus, glasses and soft contact lenses may be able to correct your vision. These options are comfortable and straightforward to use.
  • Rigid gas permeable (RGP) lenses: RGP lenses are often a reliable choice for early-to-mid-stage keratoconus. These lenses maintain their shape on the eye, providing improved vision by neutralizing the irregular corneal surface.
  • Hybrid SynergEyes contact lenses: Hybrid lenses combine a rigid centre for sharp vision with a soft outer skirt for added comfort. They allow more comfort while correcting the curves in your cornea.
  • Scleral lenses: These large lenses rest on the sclera (the white part of the eye) instead of the cornea, creating a tear-filled vault that enhances both comfort and vision while protecting the sensitive corneal surface.

Our team is experienced in fitting all these specialty lenses, and we’ll work to find a solution that works for you.
