Considering Laser Eye Surgery? Start with a Consultation

Laser vision correction can be life-changing. But it’s not one-size-fits-all. In a laser vision correction consultation, we can gain a full understanding of your vision and let you know if you’re a good candidate.

We’ll start with a comprehensive eye exam, where we’ll assess your eyes, talk about your goals, and help you understand what’s possible. Once you’re ready, we can refer you to a trusted ophthalmologist or refractive surgeon in the Oakville area.

We’re also here to support you before and after your surgery. If you’re ready to take the first step, book a laser vision correction consultation with our experienced team today!

Who Is a Good Candidate for Laser Eye Surgery?

Laser vision correction is often suitable for patients who are nearsighted, farsighted, or have astigmatism, but it depends on your prescription and the health of your eyes. The thickness and shape of your cornea and any medical or eye conditions all play a role in whether you’re a match.

A good candidate typically:

  • Is 18 or older
  • Has had a stable prescription for at least a year
  • Has healthy corneas
  • Doesn’t have cataracts, glaucoma, or severe dry eye
  • Isn’t currently pregnant or nursing

Your Consultation & Types of Laser Eye Surgery

Your laser eye surgery consultation starts with a comprehensive eye exam and a discussion about your long-term vision goals. We’ll take precise measurements, assess the shape and health of your corneas, and chat about your lifestyle, work, and what you’re hoping to get out of surgery.

Not all procedures suit every eye or person, and that’s okay. Based on your prescription and needs, we’ll discuss the different surgery types that might suit you.

LASIK reshapes the cornea using a laser after creating a thin flap in the eye’s outer layer. It’s a popular option for people with mild to moderate prescriptions and a healthy corneal thickness.

Recovery is usually quick, with most people seeing clearly within a day or 2.

PRK removes the cornea’s outermost layer (it grows back) and reshapes the surface underneath. It’s often recommended for patients with thinner corneas or certain lifestyle needs, like athletes or people who work in dusty environments.

Recovery typically takes a little bit longer than LASIK, but it can offer similar results.

SMILE is a newer, minimally invasive procedure that uses a small laser incision to remove a tiny piece of tissue within the cornea. It’s generally used to treat nearsightedness and is a good option for those with active lifestyles or dry eye.

No flaps are created, which some patients prefer.

Dry Eye & Other Post-Surgery Considerations

Dry eye is a common concern after laser vision correction, especially for those who already experience symptoms. In fact, dry eye can affect your candidacy and comfort during recovery. If you experience dry eye, we offer customized dry eye treatment plans, including IPL and RF if needed, to help you manage your symptoms before or after surgery.

Other short-term side effects of laser eye surgery may include:

  • Halos around lights
  • Light sensitivity
  • Reduced night vision
  • Discomfort or mild irritation
  • Watery eyes

These symptoms usually improve with time. If you have any questions, we’re always here to help. We’ll support you through the entire healing process.
