Downtown Oakville, also known as Old Oakville, is an older section of Oakville that is home to a variety of boutique shops, interesting art galleries, trendy restaurants and eye-catching sights, mostly housed in historic buildings. Downtown Oakville is located right on the shores or Lake Ontario, so makes for an eye-appealing place to spend an afternoon.

Boat watch at Bronte Harbour

Watching the boats come in and out of Bronte Harbour is the best way to spend a nice afternoon in Oakville. Not only are there plenty of different boats to marvel at, you’ll also find a playground, paths to walk along the water, little shops and great restaurants.

Social Distance on a patio

Now that restaurants are beginning to open again, spending an afternoon on a patio with a cool drink, tasty snacks and friends or family is the perfect way to ring in the summer.

Hit the trails for a walk, hike or cycle

Getting outside for a walk in the fresh summer air is a great way to pass an afternoon. With the Great Lakes Waterfront Trail and the Trans Canada Trail running through Oakville along the shores of Lake Ontario offering both paved and off road hiking and cycling options, there is no shortage of space to explore.

Take up gardening

Gardening in your yard or on your patio is such a rewarding way to introduce summer. Planting flowers, herbs, vegetables and trees is not only relaxing, you’ll get to enjoy the fruits of your labour for years to come.

Spend the day in a park

Whether you have kids to entertain or are just looking for a peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle of city life, heading to the park is the perfect solution.

With dozens of parks of various sizes in the city of Oakville, there is no limit to what you can find to do. One of the biggest parks is the Bronte Creek Provincial Park where you can hike the trails, swim in the outdoor pool, go for a bike ride or even camp!

Wander around a garden or greenhouse

If you’re not the backyard gardening type, head to a local garden or greenhouse to take advantage of the new blooms. With so many colours to see the Royal Botanical Gardens in Burlington offers an afternoon full of beautiful fragrances and views. Sheridan Nurseries in Mississauga or Oakville’s Municipal Gardens are both fun spots to experience some greenery and see what kind of plants catch your eye.

Enjoy the beach

In the heat of summer there’s no better way to cool down than by hitting the beach to don those summer shades and enjoy the soothing beach views. Pack a picnic for lunch and bring sand toys for the kids to make a fun day out of it. There are a few beaches in Oakville to visit, or you can head to the Kelso Conservation Area in Milton for a nice boardwalk, boat rentals and food shacks.

Go camping

Now that campgrounds are starting to open up again you can pack up your tent or trailer and hit the road to one of the dozens of nearby campgrounds. Whether you need full hookups, want a lakeside property or are craving a weekend in the woods, camping is the best break from being cooped up inside that you can find.
