Who knew there were tricks to finding the perfect eyeglasses?

Once upon a time people who had to wear eyeglasses were stuck with prioritizing function over style. In 2012, Chatelaine Magazine even published an article citing that the “nerd” stereotype still existed. No more! Today, eyeglasses are as much a fashion accessory as they are a tool for better vision. You’d never wear the same pair of shoes with every outfit, so don’t do that with your eye glasses either.

We all know that while it’s possible to buy a pair of shoes that looks fine with most outfits, there’s no such thing as a one-size-fits-all shoe that looks the greatest with absolutely everything. And just as the right pair of shoes can make or break an outfit, the right pair of eyeglasses can make or break your look too!

While eyeglasses are indeed more versatile in terms of fashion compared to footwear, there’s no denying that a great choice of frames can make a huge impact on your look, turning it from “ho hum” to “wow”!

If you’re on a smaller budget, get a single, multi-purpose pair

If your budget is limited to only one pair, then choose one that offers a subtle contrast with your face in a neutral or earthy tone that matches everything. Since this is your only pair, you want to squeeze as much fashion mileage out of it as possible and will need to pay attention to the details. Buy the right shape of frames for your face – not too wide, and not too narrow.

Don’t forget to consider your needs for sun protection as well. Many people like to get an all-in-one pair with lenses that darken in bright light to function as sunglasses, and turn clear in low or indoor light to function as regular glasses.

If you have a bit more to spend on eye glasses, get more than one pair

Ideally, you should have two pairs of eye glasses – a pair plus a spare – in case your main set of eye glasses is lost or broken. If this is the route you go, make your first pair a “safe” choice that’s pretty much guaranteed to match everything (see the recommendation above regarding neutral and earthy tones) – this can function as your everyday set. For your second pair, you can be more adventurous in your choice of color and style since it doesn’t have to match absolutely everything (you have pair #1 for that!). Your spare eye glasses can be chosen for their ability to really make a statement – try to choose them based on whether or not they can serve as a fashion piece with a big “wow” factor.

If you’re in the market for a third pair, consider choosing one that’s tailor-made to look amazing as prescription sunglasses.

Some women collect eye glasses like they collect purses. Some men collect eye glasses like they collect ties. And you can too. The more pairs you have, the more options you’ll have to really stand out from the crowd and show off your sense of style!

Take the shape of your face into account when choosing your eye glasses

The ideal shape of frames will vary depending on your unique face, however, there are some easy guidelines to follow:

  • oval faces are all about balance, and the good news is that almost any shape of frames can look great – try on several styles and see which one is your favourite
  • round faces look best with lenses that are wider than they are tall (think rectangles), with thinner frames to add balance to your look
  • heart-shaped faces are well-suited to frames that are a bit wider than your forehead with detail on the lower portion of the frames
  • square faces are ideally suited for contrasting frames that are rounded, and wider than your cheekbones

Eyeglasses aren’t only about function

The next time you’re in the market for a new pair of eyeglasses, make sure they’re not only functional, but fashionable and fun to wear too!
